Couple: Scott & Alissa
Alissa and Scott’s love story is as unique as their wedding. The couple first met in middle school, where they attended ski club together. Though they had mutual friends throughout high school, they found each other rather annoying, and so it was not until the summer after their first year of college that they reconnected. What they thought would be summer love turned into a much deeper friendship, and Alissa and Scott have been together ever since.
Seven years into their relationship, the couple bought a van and set off on a cross-country road trip. It was on this trip that they decided they could spend a lifetime together, and so Scott proposed under a Joshua Tree. The road trip that deepened their connection served as much of the inspiration for their wedding.
Having grown up in the area, the couple share many special memories at Lake Tahoe, and so it served as the perfect location for their special day. The wedding was a family affair filled with personal touches and odes to the couple’s adventurous lifestyle. Alissa’s aunt and uncle, whom the couple greatly admire, preformed the ceremony, and even surprised the couple by giving them advice from their parents and grandmother. Guests watched as Alissa and Scott said their vows with the lake glittering in the background, and dream catchers fluttering in the wind. The color of the water perfectly matched the turquoise of Scott’s wedding ring and the jewelry that Alissa wore on her feet instead of shoes.
The reception overflowed with unconventional details and shades of blue, maroon, and green. Each of the tables was themed after National Parks that the bride and groom had traveled to together during their van trip, and were decorated uniquely to match the parks geography. Instead of standard flowers, much of the decor included different types of cacti and air plants, and some of the tables even had branches as their centerpieces. Personalized wine bottle labels, table signs, and cookies were designed by one of the couple’s close friends who is a graphic designer, and much of the craft beer was chosen by Alissa’s brother, who manages a local bar in nearby Reno, NV. A custom-made cake topper also featured Alissa and Scott with their backpacks on and a sign wishing them “Happy Trails”! The gifts were displayed under a teepee made of aspen trees, and the guests were offered blankets to stay cozy and warm as they danced the night away in celebration.
The fun-loving couple also chose to have their van on display at the reception, so that their friends could enjoy the place that they called home during their adventures. As the sun set, a Johnstone Studio’s photographer challenged the couple to climb atop their van for a photo. Without hesitation, they climbed up as “Faithfully” by Journey played in the background. Both Alissa and Scott are bold, adventurous, and playful; and the way that these traits were on display through every aspect of their wedding is what made the day so special. ~ Johnstone Studios Photography
